The first meeting in a series of events in which industry experts speak to secondary school pupils about their work and the opportunities arising in their sectors was held at e-Sgoil on Tuesday 5th December 2017.
On this occasion Roddie MacKay of RMK Insurance Services and Iain MacAulay of the Independent Mortgage Shop spoke about their experience in insurance and financial services.
Two sessions were held, the first with pupils from Sir E Scott School in Harris in which e-Sgoil’s technology was put to use, before pupils from the Nicolson Institute joined the speakers for a session in the e-Sgoil building.
As well as giving pupils the chance to learn more from experienced professionals about specific economic sectors, the lunchtime sessions are an opportunity to discuss various routes into those careers, including the wide range of apprenticeships and other Applied Learning qualifications on offer.
A good number of young people attended and their interest in the topic was obvious as they asked plenty of questions about jobs in the sectors, career paths and what opportunities were open to them.
The next meeting is planned for January 2018 and will be on the topic of Media and Creative Industries.
