This 8 week block offers young people the opportunity to develop their own skills through planning, setting up and running a real social enterprise. We will support you along the way to enable your young people to choose an issue they feel passionately about, decide how they would like to tackle that issue, explore ways in which trade can support that action and then finally set up and begin running a school social enterprise. The final week provides each school the chance to present their social enterprise to a panel of dragons (they can present either an idea or a running social enterprise).

Each session runs for 1 hour and most of them are spilt into 20 minutes introduction and explanation, 20 minutes class task (either in pairs, groups or whole class) and then back together for the final 20 minutes as a plenary and next steps for the following week. Teachers are provided with resources and activities and will be asked to allow some time between sessions for their young people to further develop their ideas if required.

These sessions provide young people with a chance to:

  • Understand more about the social enterprise business model
  • Explore a values driven approach to enterprise
  • Meet a social entrepreneur and ask questions
  • Plan how to set up and run a social enterprise and give it a go themselves
  • Develop skills related to entrepreneurship, enterprise and employability
  • Increase confidence and improve well-being by tacking a social or environmental issue that matters to them
  • Take part in a virtual Dragons’ Den to be in with a chance of winning seed funding to further develop their social enterprise idea

DYW Context:
This 8 week block offers young people the opportunity to develop their own skills related to entrepreneurship and enterprise by planning, setting up and running a real schools based social enterprise.

Additional Requirements:
To allow for interactive participation webcams and microphones are required.

Other Info:
There will be interactive discussion throughout the session, if school staff could facilitate group discussion and support the communication between the facilitator and the group of young people it would be much appreciated. It would be good if they could also take notes during the discussion in order to prompt young people and support them as they develop their ideas between sessions.

By taking part, schools will be eligible to be nominated for a Social Enterprise Schools Award at our annual awards ceremony in June 2023.

Social Enterprise, Employability, LfS, Skills, Business, Interdisciplinary, Finance, Literacy, Mental Health, Inequality, Racism, Climate Change and Pupil Voice
