Description:
Thanks to the UNCRC, the career education entitlements and Scotland’s continuing (1+2) languages policy, all children in Scotland have the right to use their own language, are entitled to learn additional languages and benefit from career education throughout their primary schooling.
In this interactive workshop, you will hear from primary teachers, pupils, employers and others from around the country who have taken part in a range of interdisciplinary learning experiences that have developed both languages and employability skills. From small activities through to large scale projects, find out how teachers have supported children to develop skills in communication, creativity, teamwork, problem-solving and leadership, at the same time tapping in to all the languages they know and use at home and school.
You will learn about the impact of the projects on the schools and their wider communities. We hope you come away with all the information and inspiration you need to introduce career education with a languages twist into your planning and practice.
You may even come away from the workshop with a plan to earn your school a coveted Scottish Languages Employability Award!
DYW Context:
A wide variety of languages - spoken and signed - are used and learned by our pupils and their families. This workshop explicitly relates the Expectations of Teachers/Practitioners in the DYW Career Education Standard (3-18) to the UNCRC and the increasingly diverse linguistic context of our primary classrooms.
Other Info:
A collection of language themed DYW focused materials will be shared with each primary teacher in attendance.
