August 2026 saw another strong set of exam results for students who sat their Gaelic (Learners) and Gàidhlig National Qualifications as part of the e-Sgoil and UHI North, West and Hebrides partnership.

Candidates enjoyed great success with all National 4 candidates achieving a pass. Of the candidates who sat their final exam, 100% of National 5 candidates achieved an A and 66% of Higher candidates achieved an A. The candidates, made up of a mix of school pupils and adult students, were presented for Gaelic (Learners) courses at National 4, National 5 and Higher as well as Higher Gàidhlig.

In order to facilitate this, UHI North, West and Hebrides worked in partnership with e-Sgoil as the Qualifications Scotland (QS) presenting centre for the qualifications.

It's especially encouraging to see school pupils and adult learners succeeding together, highlighting that Gaelic can be a rewarding journey at every stage of life. Our partnership with e-Sgoil is helping to remove barriers to learning, creating opportunities for people anywhere to access high quality Gaelic education online. All candidates studied online with courses delivered remotely by three e-Sgoil teachers based both in Scotland and Nova Scotia, Canada.

The availability of these online courses facilitated access to QS Gaelic qualifications for pupils and adults who may otherwise not have had access to Gaelic courses, giving them the opportunity to learn and progress towards fluency in the language.

Speaking about the results, e-Sgoil Gaelic Depute Head Teacher Laura Howitt said: “I am delighted to see the students have such success. They should be commended for their hard work and continued dedication to their studies.

Looking forward to session 2026/2027, we have appointed 3 new staff members to our evening course team and I am excited to see the positive impact this will have on our new cohort and how it will broaden the approaches to learning and teaching they experience as they embark on their learning this academic session.”

Registration for e-Sgoil Gaelic courses for the 2026/2027 session is now complete with over 90 students registered this year.
